The airline allocates two aircraft, introduces eight new routes and increases frequency on an existing route
Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, today has announced the reopening of its base in Suceava, further expanding operations in Romania. With the allocation of two state-of-the-art Airbus A321 neo family aircraft, the airline will operate a total of 43 aircraft during winter season in Romania. Suceava remain an important city to Wizz Air, and the airline is happy to grow again its capacity from the city, adding more than 169 thousand new seats for the upcoming winter season. Wizz air now offers 13 routes to six countries from Suceava “Ștefan cel Mare” International Airport. The airline continues to offer more affordable travel options, meeting the growing demand for budget-friendly flights, with tickets already available online on Wizz Air’s official website and through its mobile app from as low as RON 79*.
With a reopened base and two allocated aircraft in Suceava, this addition to the Romanian network in the 2025 winter season marks a significant step forward for Wizz Air’s operations. These aircraft will enhance connectivity from the city by enabling the launch of eight routes. Starting from 15th of December 2025, passengers can fly from Suceava to Bologna, Milan Bergamo, Venice, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Birmingham, Larnaca and Brussels Charleroi, in addition to Vienna from 30th of September. Wizz Air will also increase frequency of its flights to Dortmund, starting from 5th of January 2025.
Since the start of its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment in Romania, recognizing the country as a pivotal market. In winter 2025, the airline operates 192 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 70 destinations across 24 countries. Over the past 19 years, Wizz Air has established eight operational bases in Bucharest Baneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iasi, Sibiu, Suceava and Timisoara. The airline employs more than 1,600 people in Romania.
Speaking at the press conference in Suceava, Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, said: "We are proud to share the news of reopening our base in Suceava, along with the allocation of two state-of-the-art Airbus A321 neo family aircraft to support operations on eight newly launched routes from this wonderful city. This development represents a key milestone in strengthening our presence in Suceava, bringing our local network to 13 routes across six countries. As we further grow our operations in Romania, this step aligns with our long-term strategy to deliver ultra-low fares to an even wider range of European destinations. We look forward to welcoming passengers on board both our new and existing flights from the renewed Suceava base”.
Gheorghe Şoldan, President of Suceava County Council, added, “The reopening of the Wizz Air base in Suceava confirms that the projects we started in recent months to develop the “Stefan cel Mare” International Airport are already producing results. The allocation of two Wizz Air aircraft to the airport in Salcea and the launch of eight new routes will improve connections with Europe, attract more tourists and promote economic development. It will also provide concrete support for the diaspora who want to be closer to home. Since the beginning of my term in office, I have maintained that Suceava needs a modern, efficient airport. This is why, together with my team, I developed a strategy for its expansion and accelerated investment. In the seven and a half months since I took office as President of the Suceava County Council, we have proved that it can be done. We are installing the most efficient ILS landing system, starting the expansion of the boarding-deplaning platform, and preparing the most extensive modernisation project for Salcea Airport. The presence today in Suceava of the General Manager of Wizz Air Malta, Mr. Mauro Peneda, who came in person to deliver the long-awaited news to the people of Suceava, as well as to the inhabitants of the neighbouring counties, is the best proof that things are moving in the direction we all want. I wish to have aircraft full of passengers, to become one of the top 3 airports in Romania and, implicitly, to bring even more flights to Suceava.”
Ioan Măriuța, General Manager of Suceava “Ștefan cel Mare” International Airport, said: “We are pleased to announce the reopening of the Wizz Air operational base at Suceava «Stefan cel Mare» Airport. Since the start of operations at Suceava in August 2016 with the first direct flight to Milan, Wizz Air has carried more than 3,000,000 passengers and continues to be a reliable airline for our passengers, who still benefit from direct flights to London, Rome, Milan, Dortmund and Memmingen. The operational base means greater connectivity for passengers, easier access to the business opportunities our region has to offer, while ensuring a more relevant position for the Airport, ranked 5th in the national passenger traffic, and soon with an operational base. We are approaching 10 years of partnership with Wizz Air, a partnership that has helped us to grow and be closer to our loved ones, and which we want to continue because it is indispensable to our common customer – the passenger”.
