Wizz Air, the most environmentally sustainable airline in the Europe, Middle East, and Asia region*, announced the expansion of its base in Sofia with a seventh aircraft and seven new routes. The new direct flights will begin in 2025 and will connect the Bulgarian capital with Prague (Czech Republic), Turin and Lamezia Terme (Italy), Chișinău (Moldova), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Marrakesh (Morocco) and Warsaw (Poland). The expansion of Wizz Air’s operations in Bulgaria is part of its long-term growth strategy in the country and the region, aiming to offer passengers even more opportunities for affordable, convenient, and sustainable travel. With the expansion, Wizz Air’s total capacity from Sofia Airport will increase up to 1,29 mln seats annually, over 100,000 more than its current capacity. This announcement also reinforces Wizz Air’s strategic position as a carrier in Bulgaria, increasing to 29% market share and connecting previously unserved destinations.
Wizz Air’s new routes offer excellent opportunities for weekend getaways, sunny vacations, and cultural tourism. From the romance of Prague and the exotic charm of Marrakesh, and Palma de Mallorca to the unique history of Warsaw and Chișinău, and the architectural splendor of Turin, the newly announced destinations cater to every traveler's taste. These new connections will also increase tourism to Bulgaria, allowing more visitors to explore the wide variety of cultural and natural attractions the country has to offer, from mountains to the sea.
In addition, Wizz Air today announced an increase in flight frequency on four routes from Sofia. Passengers will now have more year-round travel options from the Bulgarian capital to these exciting destinations: Barcelona, Hamburg, Milan-Bergamo, and Basel.
Wizz Air celebrated the positive news today with its partners at Sofia Airport, organizing a special press conference attended by Vassil Terziev, Mayor of Sofia, and Pavlin Petrov, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Bulgaria. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Wizz Air’s first flight from Bulgaria, which departed from Sofia Airport in 2005. Since then, the airline has become a preferred choice for low-cost travel, constantly expanding its route network across the country. To date, over 30 million passengers have flown with Wizz Air to and from Bulgaria. With today’s announcement, it will operate 53 routes between Bulgaria and 16 countries, providing passengers with affordable options for both business and leisure travel across and beyond Europe. Its Bulgarian fleet consists of nine Airbus A320 Family aircraft based in Sofia and Varna, supported by more than 360 local employees, whose dedication and professionalism play a key role in the airline’s growth in the country.
