With over 10 years of activity at Iasi International Airport, this achievement underscores Wizz Air’s commitment to providing convenient, affordable and reliable air travel options
Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, proudly announces a significant milestone as it celebrates carrying over 8 million passengers to and from Iasi. This number highlights the airline’s commitment to providing affordable, high-quality air travel opportunities for travellers in the region. Since the launch of its operations at Iasi International Airport in December 2014 and the opening of its base in July 2016, Wizz Air has firmly established its local presence and continuous growth.
Over the past ten years, Wizz Air has become a preferred choice for Iasi passengers seeking affordable low fares paired with high quality services, underlining its commitment to the Romanian economy, tourism sector and aviation job market. To commemorate this important milestone, the lucky 8 millionth passenger, who travelled on a flight from Milan Bergamo to Iasi on July 22nd, was welcomed on the apron at Iasi Airport and awarded a 100 EUR voucher valid for Wizz Air flights.
Since the start of its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment in Romania, recognizing the country as a pivotal market. In the 2025 winter season, the airline operates 21 routes to 13 countries from Iasi, including the connections to popular destinations like Memmingen, Dortmund, Venice Treviso, Milan Bergamo and Bologna.
Anastasia Novak, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: “Reaching 8 million passengers in Iasi is a proud moment for Wizz Air and a clear reflection of the community’s continued trust in our services. This milestone underscores our commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and making air travel more accessible. We thank our passengers for choosing us and look forward to welcoming even more travellers on board from Iasi.”
The President of Iasi County Council, Costel Alexe, said: “Wizz Air has reached the milestone of 8 million passengers at Iasi Airport, a result that confirms both the trust that passengers have in the company and the remarkable evolution of the airport, our main regional air hub. I congratulate the Wizz Air team for their commitment to connecting Iasi with Europe, and the Iasi Airport team for their sustained effort in providing the best conditions for passengers and operators. As President of the Iasi County Council, I reaffirm our firm commitment to the continued development of the airport as a generator of economic growth and international openness. Investing in infrastructure, expanding operational capacity and attracting new routes remain our priorities, and working with partners such as Wizz Air demonstrates that our shared vision is yielding concrete results. Together, we manage to strengthen Iasi's strategic position on the European air transportation map.”
Romeo Vatră, General Director of Iasi Airport, said: “We are pleased to mark today an important milestone: 8 million passengers carried by Wizz Air in the 11 years of activity at Iasi Airport. It is a milestone that reflects not only the remarkable performance of the largest airline operator at our airport, but also the constant trust of passengers in the services offered. With 21 direct destinations, Wizz Air plays an essential role in connecting the region with important European hubs. We thank the lucky passenger for choosing Iasi Airport and congratulate the Wizz Air team for the results achieved and for the major contribution to the development of air traffic in Iasi.
